Look, I know that shooting off fireworks in public is illegal... but there was a time that on the 4th of July the streets were full of people lighting firecrackers, bottle rockets, roman candles, etc.

I remember when I was about 10 years old, 95th Street (which was a loooong block), was full of smoke. I remember one of the older kids throwing a lit mat of firecrackers into a garbage can -- and the racket it made. And watching some of the older kids get into roman candle wars...

I remember the day after -- how we'd scour the ground looking for unexploded firecrackers... Those were good times... I understand why they're illegal nowadays... but that doesn't mean it wasn't fun... Laughing

What do you remember about the 4th of July in Woodhaven?

I lived on 90th Street & 85th Rd for 25 years (60's-80's) and the din of firecrackers, bottle rockets, M-80's, ashcans, Cherry Bombs and the dreaded Blockbuster (1/2 stick of dynamite!) each year was incredible. I remember holding the little Lady Finger firecrackers between your fingers as they went off to get a nifty numb sensation. Stung like hell but woudn't break the skin. I would start hoarding almost a month+ before the 4th and would save all the pretty stuff till after dark. What I remember most was how it wasn't just 1 or 2 houses or 1 or 2 blocks but EVERYWHERE! Everyone had fireworks. It was great! As I tell these stories to my wife and daughter I look down and wonder how it is I still have all ten fingers. My specialty was tossing a full dozen lit bottle rockets into the air to see how many different directions they would go. Youth =Stupidity.

Don't be insulting. It takes a head to create and reply. It was the name for a type of firework.

I'm well aware of that -- it was a name used by those that were ignorant. And it will not be tolerated here.

Did you get a red pencil for the fourth ?

It's a user name related to fireworks and the term was used by everyone in Woodhaven. I guess you're calling us all ignorant.

Calling people names is insulting.

Yes, I'm calling those that used the term -- back then -- ignorant.

Those that use the term now -- and choose it as their user name -- are either trolling for a reaction, or beyond ignorant.

If you're insulted by that, I guess I can live with that Very Happy

Yeah, I was insulted by your insults: " Use your head, " and your calling me ignorant.

I'm sure you can live with being insulting- seems like your style, smiley.

You are really going low road here, so I'll stay on the high road.

All you had to do was eliminate the word you find offensive, without saying use your head. You took its use out of context.

You make a lot of judgements without knowing who or what you're discussing- the people who used tha term were not ignorant. It was the vernacular. Our usage still contains words that can be considered ethnically offensive, and I bet you might use some yourself. You might not want someoene to call you ignorant when you do, but if someone tells you they're offended, you might want to be open to hearing it. The style you demonstrate here- condemantion and insult with a first explanattion of what can not be stated- does not reflect an openness.

Dialogue is probably more effective than name-calling. Try it!

It was a fireworks reference. They were sold by that name.

Your repudiation doesn't mean anything to me- not that I can't t hear an insult. I love myself and you can think what you want. I'm just trying to open your mind to the facts.

Censoring clouds truth.

Insult creates rancor.

There will be no dialogue on this board when it comes to using racial slurs.

End of story.
